Sheppard Ave East LRT Site
Welcome to the Sheppard Ave East Rapid Transit lines (Right-of-Way) ROW page
Sheppard Ave East is currently service by TTC routes 85 and 190 starting at Don Mills Terminal. These routes connect to the Sheppard Subway at Don Mills that travels 6km west to the Yonge St Subway Line. An 85 bus does travel between Don Mills and Yonge St also.
In 2007, the City of Toronto announced The Transit City plan for building 7 new LRT lines connecting to all parts of Toronto with Sheppard Ave East being one of then as well the first to be built. It will run from Don Mills Station to Meadowvale Rd 14km away.
It will mark the first time that something other than a bus or a subway was built to extend the line from where the subway stop in the first place. In my long range plan going back to 2004, I do see a subway going from Pickering in the east to the Airport in the west, but an LRT is all that is needed now. I even support converting the existing 6km subway line to LRT as it will help to take the line west of Yonge St a lot easier as well providing the missing connection between the Yonge Subway Line and the Downsview station the current end of the line for the Spadina line until 2015 or later when the next extension to Vaughan open up.
In June 2007, the Province of Ontario announced the MoveOntario2020 plan for transit in the GTA with Transit City being one of the many projects for it.
On April 1 2009, the Province of Ontario announced full funding for the construction of the Scarborough Rapid Transit lines with Sheppard Ave East being one of them.
On May 31, 2009, I shot a couple of video's from the car front windshield of what Sheppard Ave looks like today before the building of the new ROW for the Sheppard LRT line got underway. I shot it going east and then going west from the centre lane. The video's have been cut to be place up on youtube site as it was over 30 minutes in each direction. You will have to visit the video and photo page to get the link to these video's. The video's are also on my site, but will take longer to download.
Also in 2009, I did a number of walking tour of Sheppard Ave East from Highway 404 to Meadowvale Road shooting every intersection, bridges, side streets, bus stops as well a number of other things. I plan on doing the same thing after construction is done to do a comparison as before and after shots. I will be doing photo shoots of the construction, but not as much as I did on St Clair Ave as this project is outside my normal trip pattern and a longer trip from Mississauga to get to.
At this time, I don't know if there will be phases for this LRT line like St Clair or it will be one continue process. I do know work on waterline and sewers is taking place in various sections before the main construction starts. I am assuming the hydro overhead will be bury, but will not have the same impact as it did on St Clair Ave.
Sheppard Ave is class as an Avenue under the City Official Plan.
The cost of building this line has already increased in cost when first plan and I expect to see it climb more until it completed.
There are still many unknown question related to building this LRT line since Metrolinx the Regional Transit body will own everything pertaining to the ROW from the tracks to the vehicles themselves. As of Dec 24, 2009, we don't know if the track gauge will be the same as TTC 4'-107/8 or standard gauge of 4'-8. We don't know who is going to build the vehicles considering is already going to build new LRV's for TTC existing fleet that is single ended while Sheppard and the rest of Transit City lines will be duel ended. TTC should have went with Duel ends for the existing fleet order and that is another story. We do not know how Sheppard line will connect to the Don Mills Line and the Finch Line to offer a continues ride from the east end of Toronto to the west end with the chance it will end up at the airport. This has a major impact on how it connect to the Don Mills Station that house the Sheppard Subway that will be at the same level of the LRT and the bus terminal.
Check the History Page as it will have all the up to date information on it since the 1800's.
Phase I As I see it at this time is building a new grade separation for GO Stouffville line that service Sheppard Ave at the Agincourt station.
Phase II Will start at Meadowvale Rd as that where TTC plans to start the building process in the first place.
Phase III This is to cover the extension to the Toronto Zoo that is north of Sheppard Ave off Meadowvale Rd. There is to be an EA for this extension as well one to connect to Scarborough Town Centre to the south.
Phase IV This is to cover the building of a new Carhouse yard for this line, but not sure of the location at this time since TTC has not made that location known.
Phase V This is protection for the Scarborough-Malvern Line that could see the top haft built from Sheppard Ave south to the on that will house the oylimyia Pool for the PAN AM Games in 2015 since this line has be deferred to 2020 at this time. With Toronto getting the PAM AM games in 2015, there is a chance the whole S-M line running from Kennedy Station for the Bloor-Danforth Line could see construction for it and this phase will not be require..
